New Metcalfe middle school is greeted with enthusiasm

EDMONTON — Metcalfe County Middle School students and staff gushed over the new amenities at the new middle school building Friday.

The old middle school, which was housed at 100 Hornet Avenue, was built in 1957 as a high school. When Metcalfe County High School was built in 1994, the building became the site of the middle school. The former middle school was given the rating of a category four school by the Kentucky Board of Education to describe the facility's need for repair. The new middle school, attached to Metcalfe County High School, officially opened to students Thursday. Metcalfe County Middle School Principal Allen Trotter said the new “state of the art” building better meets the needs of students.

“This opens the door for new opportunities,” Trotter said.

The new middle school contains a 450 seating capacity auditorium, new technology including: interactive SMART Boards, Nooks for students to check out at the library and iPads.

“The new auditorium will allow us to highlight the arts and humanities more so than ever before,” Trotter said.

The school is also equipped with larger classrooms, a brand new cafeteria overlooking the outdoor courtyard and a new gym to be shared between the high school and middle school. The building also features heightened security with approximately 62 video cameras throughout the school.
