With the onslaught of a new year, many are making their way to fitness centers to attempt to lose some weight or to try to improve their overall fitness level.
Some people are visiting the gyms for the first time.
Cathy Botts, fitness director at Extreme Fitness for Women, said she has seen several new faces this week.
“We’ve probably sold between 30 to 50 [memberships] so far,” she said, adding the number is average for this time of the year.
Many people start off with lots of gusto at the start of a new year, but slack off because they don’t see immediate results.
“We see a drop in numbers come mid-March,” Botts said.
Botts and other staff members at Extreme Fitness for Women reach out to new members in a number of ways to help them stick to their fitness goals.
One thing the fitness facility’s staff does for new members is to offer a free exercise machine orientation to make sure they know how to use the equipment, she said.
Extreme Fitness for Women also hosts an annual weight loss challenge to help members reach their weight loss goals. This year marks the eighth year for the challenge, Botts said, adding that registration begins on Monday.
Extreme also offers a maintenance program to help those who have reached their goal with a weight-loss program maintain their desired weight, she said.
