BCSO: New Year's is taxing time

GLASGOW — The Barren County Sheriff’s Office was buzzing with activity Monday afternoon. While the bookkeepers at the sheriff’s office collected taxes for the year-end and end-of-the-month due date, deputies prepared for a night of keeping the streets safe on the holiday with the highest number of drunk driving calls, New Year’s Eve.

Bookeeper Nancy Botts worked at her desk to enter  payments for the last day to collect property taxes before the Jan. 1 deadline.  If the taxes were not paid by the time the office closed at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 31, the property taxes would have 5 percent delinquent penalty.

“We’ve been very busy today,” Botts said.

In addition to tax deadlines, the end of the year is also associated with celebration.

“On almost every street there is some sort of New Year’s get together,” said Barren County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Houchens.

The party atmosphere also elevates the chance of danger and increases the risk of drunk driving. According to Mother Against Drunk Driving (MADD), each year nearly 10,000 people are killed in drunk driving crashes. Last year, drunk driving was the cause of 171 deaths in Kentucky. MADD described New Year’s as “the most dangerous day of the year for drunk driving on our nation’s roadways.”

Houchens said on New Year’s the number of reckless and impaired driving calls nearly doubles. One year, Houchens said there were four drunk driving arrests in one night.  On New Year’s, he said the deputies try to be more mobile and vigilant of impaired drivers on the streets.
