Gov. Steve Beshear says he fully intends to support Alison Lundergan Grimes as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate.
Grimes currently serves as the state’s secretary of state. She initiated her interest in the senatorial seat on July 1. That seat is currently held by Republican incumbent Sen. Mitch McConnell.
“I plan to fully support Alison for the U.S. Senate and I will be at her grand opening and formal roll out of her campaign,” Beshear said on Wednesday following a check presentation in Tompkinsville for sewer rehabilitation projects for the city of Tompkinsville and the city of Gamaliel.
He continued he plans to help raise money for Grimes’ campaign and will be “trying to get her as many votes for her as possible.”
Beshear also said he believes Grimes will make a good senator and will represent Kentucky well.
“She is a fresh face. If you like what Washington does today, I guess you could send our current senator back, but it’s a mess up there,” Beshear said. “It’s time that we get some new people up there who are willing to sit down and work across the aisle and work with Democrats and Republicans and get something done for the people of this country, instead of just feathering their own nests and taking care of their own political issues.”
Grimes will roll out her campaign officially on Tuesday.
