Horsing around with art

New exhibit features several paintings of horses

GLASGOW — The artwork of Barren County artist Sally Puntel is now on display in the Christeen Snavely Art Gallery at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center.

Puntel, who dabbles in a variety of mediums, began painting in 2005.

“I paint because to me it is such a sense of accomplishment,” she said. “I like doing things that make me feel like I’ve accomplished something.”

Puntel was inspired to take up painting by a friend who worked with watercolors when living in Ohio.

“I always thought I would like to paint,” she said. “When Ken and I retired and moved to Kentucky, I found we had just moved into a real community of tremendously talented artists. So I started taking classes with Alida Akers, Nancy Doss, Patty Hughes, Jerry Arnell and Ken Hosmer. I continue to take classes whenever I can.”

Her favorite subject to paint is horses.

Puntel enjoyed horseback riding for many years, until back and neck surgery prohibited her from participating in the sport.

Where she lives in southwestern Barren County, it is not uncommon for an Amish family to drive past her house in a horse and buggy.

If Puntel is outside and sees the buggy coming, she will often ask if she can give the horses an apple if she happens to have one available.

“I think horses are probably one of God’s most beautiful animals,” she said, but added they are difficult to paint. “Some of [my horse paintings] have ended up in file 13.”

But others have won her accolades.

“I guess that’s when I really feel an accomplishment; when I have done a painting that is admired by other people,” she said.

The cultural center exhibit is not her first solo show.

“I did one last year around Kentucky Derby time at the chamber,” she said.

Puntel, a member of the Arts Guild of the Barrens, also displays her artwork at the art guild’s gallery at 212 On the Main and at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library.
