Monroe County Schools superintendent screening committee being formed for search

GLASGOW — The screening committee for the selection of Monroe County Schools’ next superintendent is scheduled to be in place by May 2, the Monroe County Board of Education decided Thursday during a special-called meeting.

The committee will seek a replacement for Lewis Carter, who announced his retirement earlier this month, effective July 1. Carter has served as superintendent of Monroe County Schools for five years.

The screening committee will consist of a principal, two teachers, one parent, one classified employee and one school board member. Eddie Proffitt will be the school board member, along with Tony Harlan, principal of Monroe County Middle School. Other members of the committee haven’t been named.

“After the screening committee is in place, we are going to meet on May 15,” said Dr. Kirk Biggerstaff, secretary to the committee. “That will be our first meeting (and) that is the same day the applications are due.”

Committee members will begin screening applications that day and start the ranking process, he said.

“We will meet again in a few days to look at the rankings that everyone has given the applications,” he said. “The board has approved us for seven finalists to interview.”

Interviews are set to begin May 22-23 and could go longer, depending on how many applicants the committee recommends the school board interviews, Biggerstaff said.
