YMCA event encourages healthy family lifestyle

GLASGOW — This Saturday the Barren County Family YMCA will join hundreds of YMCAs across the country in encouraging children and their families to be healthy.

Healthy Kids Day at the Barren County YMCA will begin at 10 a.m. and go until 2 p.m. Health and activity-related vendors from the local community will set up booths at the event that will offer dental and vision screenings, talk about healthy eating and offer extracurricular activities for children to sign up for. Not only is it a day for children to have fun, but more importantly, it’s a day for parents to learn how to guide their children in a healthy direction, according to YMCA childcare director Melissa Roach, who is organizing the event.

“We’re gonna have a good variety of different things that will be useful to parents,” Roach said.

The YMCA will set up an obstacle course in the back parking lot for children to try, Roach said. Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity for parents to get ideas for ways to stay healthy as a family, such as setting up an obstacle course in the backyard. The activities and health vendors will show parents and families the variety of healthy resources located in Barren County.

“I think it’s important for parents to see what the community has to offer in the way of a healthy lifestyle,” Roach said.
