Madilyn Grace Morgan would have been 14 years old now and possibly the Queen of Texting, an up-and-coming basketball star or artist or the class president, but none of those were her fate.
She won’t be thinking about dating or going to a prom, because pulmonary veno occlusive disease caused her death in 2005.
But her mother takes comfort that out of the sadness, an event emerged that for six years has brought Barren Countians and others in the area together in a way nothing else likely has. Maddie’s mother said that event – a 5-kilometer walk and run – embodies Maddie’s spirit.
“It’s Maddie to me,” Donna Morgan said.
Maddie’s family created the Butterflies for Maddie Foundation in 2006, and the 5K is coming around again Saturday as the organization’s primary fundraiser.
Because the community has been so wonderful with its support through the years, the event has helped keep Maddie’s spirit alive in her heart, Morgan said. It represents her daughter’s birthday parties and Christmases all rolled into one great day.
