A local physical therapy facility is offering a new treatment technique intended to speed up recovery time in patients with a build up of scar tissue.
Heartland Rehabilitations Services on North Race Street, formerly Miller Physical Therapy, started offering Astym, and hopes to increase the amount of patients they are able to treat with the new technique.
Astym is a therapy treatment that regenerates healthy soft tissues and reduces unwanted scar tissue, according to the Astym website. A physical therapist runs a plastic tool along the injured muscles and tendons, and straightens out and shrinks any built-up scar tissue.
Heartland physical therapist Laura Goulbourne became certified in Astym treatment in December, after she completed a three-day course. Goulbourne first heard about the treatment technique a year or two ago, she said, and as she learned more about it, she decided she wanted to bring the treatment to Glasgow.
“It has had great outcomes,” Goulbourne said. “It’s relatively unknown in this community. I wanted to introduce it to our community.”
