7:52 MORNING UPDATE: Jailer reports drug contraband incident

GLASGOW — Barren County Jailer Matt Mutter announced in a press release early Wednesday morning that drug contraband was found with an inmate after a fire alarm was activated in a cell last week.

At approximately 11:25 p.m. Oct. 21, deputies responded to the alarm and, upon entering the cell, noticed that inmate Derick Flatt, 24, of Cave City was behaving suspiciously, according to the press release.

“Flatt was searched and a pill bottle was found near a body cavity on Flatt’s person,” the press release states. “A later inspection of the bottle’s contents revealed tobacco, rolling papers, and suspected ‘spice’ [synthetic marijuana].”

Flatt had reported to serve 12 days for no operator’s license, leaving the scene of accident, drug paraphernalia, and possession of synthetic cannabinoids, according to the press release.

“The inmates who turn themselves in are the most dangerous when it comes to contraband.  They are the most likely to attempt to smuggle in illegal items,” Mutter stated in the press release.

The incident is under investigation and criminal charges are pending the outcome of that investigation, according to the statement.
