Domestic Abuse Expert: Victim did what she could

GLASGOW — Jamie Tapscott did all she could do to protect herself, according to an expert on domestic violence situations.

Tapscott, 28, of Horse Cave, was shot and killed on Nov. 26 by her long-time boyfriend, Jason Horton, 33, of Cave City. Horton committed suicide later that same day.

“She did everything she could have done to stay safe and unfortunately, the tragedy occurred,” said Lee Alcott, executive director of Barren River Area Safe Space Inc.

The couple had been together for five to six years and during that time they had a history of domestic violence.

Their legal history dated back to 2008. Tapscott filed an emergency protective order against Horton on July 16, 2008, and then again on March 20, 2009, when Tapscott alleged to Cave City police that Horton attempted to choke her during a fight.

The couple had been living with Horton’s mother in Cave City for a while, but Tapscott left and moved in with family in Horse Cave. She had been living with her mother and grandmother for about a month prior to her murder.
