Officials: Flu season may be bad

GLASGOW — The flu has hit Monroe County hard, causing the county’s school officials to cancel school for the remainder of the week.

“We are seeing a significant amount of flu in our community,” said Jill Ford, nursing supervisor at the Monroe County Health Department.

Ford provided an example to show how rampant the flu is in Monroe County. She said a local hospital official reported 100 out of 250 patients had tested positive for the flu since Nov. 22.

A local physician, Dr. Michael Carter, who is also chairman of the Monroe County Board of Education, treated about 16 patients on Wednesday with the flu in his office.

There are two strains of flu that have hit Monroe County — Type A and Type B.

“According to the lab, a majority of what they are seeing is the Type A strain,” said Ford.

Symptoms of Type A flu are cough, fever, body aches, headaches and some nausea.

“But most of it is coughing, fever and aching all over,” Carter said.

With the Type B flu, vomiting is also a symptom, he said.

Both Carter and Ford are urging patients to get flu vaccinations, however, there is some question as to whether the flu strains present in the county are resistant to the vaccinations.

“I know of two children who had the flu mists and they both ended up with the flu,” Carter said.
