Barren County Fiscal Court addresses speed limits

GLASGOW — The fiscal court passed on first reading two ordinances addressing local speed limits during its regular meeting Tuesday night.

Ordinances 528 and 529 focused on speed limits in the Fox Hollow subdivision. Neither Fox Trail nor Clubhouse Lane have had speed limit signs to date, and county roads with no posted speed limits have a default maximum speed of 55 mph, explained John Benningfield, the magistrate in Fox Hollow’s district.

“That’s just way too fast for a residential area,” Benningfield said.

There was an incident of a child almost being hit by a car, Benningfield said, which contributed to the speed limit concern. The required 75 percent or more of subdivision residents signed a petition to have the speed limits adjusted to 25 mph, and that 25 mph speed limit passed on first reading Tuesday night.

“We gotta remember we’re elected by the people of our district ... if you have all those people wanting that speed limit sign, we should pass that,” Benningfield said.

Magistrate Chris Steward expressed concern that the county is spending money on speed limit signs that are not being enforced, but Road Supervisor Johnny Kinslow said there have been some speeding tickets given on other county roads after the fiscal court has approved a lower speed limit.

“I just think, in the subdivisions it’s a good thing,” Kinslow said.
