Edmonton gives nod to adopting fire lane ordinance

Edmonton city officials have agreed to adopt an ordinance prohibiting motorists from parking in emergency fire lanes.

The city council agreed to take this step Monday night after county resident Cindy Cassady approached the council about the issue.

Cassady had addressed the city council about the issue at the council’s March meeting. There was some question as to what authority the city council would have in prohibiting motorists from parking in fire lanes due to them not being on city-owned property.

She told council members she had contacted the state fire marshal about the issue and was told she should talk to the mayor or the police chief about any existing ordinance that could be enforced.
