Barren River Lake State Resort Park wants local food, talks to farmers

GLASGOW — Area farmers gathered Thursday afternoon to meet with the chef and park manager of Barren River Lake State Resort Park to talk about the possibilities of selling local food directly to the park.

State park chef Rick Lenoir started working at Barren River Lake State Resort Park last July, and brought with him a passion for using locally produced food.

“I want folks to be more aware of what we have around here,” Lenoir said.

Barren River Lake is not just a Barren County park, but a regional and state park, Lenoir said, so it was important for him to get farmers from all surrounding counties gathered at the park Thursday for a meeting about supplying the park with local products. About a dozen farmers, along with extension agents from three counties, sat with Lenoir and park manager Lisa Davis and discussed how selling food to the park would work, and how it would benefit both the farmers and the park. The park would have higher quality food that visitors will appreciate is bought locally, and farmers will be able to earn money and have their names advertised at the state park buffet with the food they provided.

“It’d be a nice marketing feature for both of us,” Lenoir said.

It can only be beneficial to all those invovled, Davis said.

“I feel very strongly that it will be a win-win for the local farmers and the park,” Davis said.

Lenoir and Davis outlined policies for how the farmers need to be qualified, and how the state decides what prices can be offered to farmers.
