School district could face $900,000 shortfall

GLASGOW —

At a special Barren County Board of Education meeting Monday night at Barren County Middle School, Superintendent Bo Matthews announced that there is an expected $900,000 shortfall from the 2012-13 to the 2013-14 school year budget.

The meeting was conducted specifically to review assessments and other school data for Barren County Middle School, Barren County High School, Austin Tracy Elementary School and Park City Elementary. A similar meeting Tuesday night will discuss the remaining Barren County schools. During the meeting, the next year’s school budget came up as an item of concern where Matthews said that cutbacks are most likely to be imminent.

John Stith, Barren County Schools director of finance said the large shortfall has a lot to do with unexpected costs including the Kentucky school districts paying off a $50-$60 million Kentucky School Boards Insurance Trust deficit and the sequestration provision of the 2011 Budget Control Act, which are planned government controlled budget cuts to education and other areas of federal funding.
