A referendum that will allow wine to be sold by the bottle at a Barren County business passed Tuesday by a landslide.
Only one question was on the ballot, which was, “Are you in favor of the sale of wine at the proposed Mattingly Farms Winery?”
Voters in only one precinct, Thomerson Park or Dry Fork B-103, voted in the special election. A total of 82 people voted in the election, with 67 casting their ballots in favor of the referendum and 15 against it. Two people voted absentee, with only one voting for the referendum.
Jared and Ashton Mattingly lobbied to get the referendum on the ballot. They intend to sell wine by the bottle at Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese located along Thomerson Park Road in the Austin Community of southern Barren County.
The Mattinglys learned of the results shortly after the polls closed on Tuesday.
“We are very excited,” said Ashton Mattingly. “We are grateful for our supportive neighbors and community and are very excited to expand our business.”
The couple plans to plant grapes in the spring to start their vineyard.
