Club members learn more about MLK

Jylar Johnson knows who Dr. Martin Luther King is and what he did in the 1960s.

“He’s an African-American man who made it equal for black and white people could all go to the same school,” said the 13-year-old.

Johnson and other members of the Boys and Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County were treated to a visit by several guest speakers on Monday during the club’s Dr. Martin Luther King Camp.

The club is in the same building on Bunche Avenue that once housed Ralph Bunche High School, an all-black high school until 1965 when local schools were integrated.

For black children to be prohibited from attending school with white children is something the club members had a hard time imagining Monday.

“I think it would have been horrible,” Johnson said.
