Students problem solve like engineers

GLASGOW — South Green Elementary second graders got to be Kentucky Department of Transportation engineers  for the day during the “Float Your Boat” presentation on Wednesday.

Jeff Moore, a KDT engineer, discussed the different roles of engineers to construct and maintain roadways and structures. At the end of the presentation, students were given the task to work in teams to create at boat out of 6-inch by 6-inch sided aluminum foil that could float and hold metal washers.

Moore explained that his role as engineer typically follows five steps: Identifying a need for a new way to help people get from one place to another; plan how to go about doing that; work with other engineers who design a “recipe” for new structure; build the structure and finally work with traffic engineers to figure out how to best maintain the newly constructed bridge or roadway.
