Engineering academy opens doors to students

GLASGOW — Local educators and members of the community got a firsthand look at the Glasgow High School Academy of Engineering Thursday night, as students took the time to showcase their design capabilities.

Engineering instructor JR Dakin said the academy is a way to better educate students and prepare them for postsecondary engineering course work.

“We have some great, new equipment that has got us going,” he said. “We have lots of projects going on. This is our first year of having the academy, and we’ve had Project Lead The Way (PLTW) as our engineering curriculum for about six years now.”

PLTW helps to prepare students for science, technology, mathematics and engineering, and partners with middle and high schools across the nation.

Dakin said this year’s students will serve as a blueprint for future students.

“The freshman group, this year, will be our first graduates of the actual academy,” he said.
