Billboard expense is concern for Glasgow-Barren County Tourist, Convention Commission

GLASGOW — Members of the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission have an opportunity to promote the Glasgow-Barren County area on a billboard located at the 105-mile marker along Interstate 65.

Whether or not they seize the opportunity is contingent on what Caveland Marketing Authority officials decide on Wednesday.

Ann Stewart, marketing director for the tourism commission, informed commissioners Tuesday that a 20- by-60 foot space on the billboard is available for rent at a cost of $550 per month provided the commission signs a one-year agreement with the advertising agency, Heartland Outdoor Media.

Stewart learned about the chance to advertise on the billboard on Monday and said it is an opportunity that doesn’t come along very often.

At present, the commission doesn’t have any type of advertising along the interstate promoting Glasgow-Barren County.

“We don’t have anything to tell people to stop in Glasgow,” Stewart said.

Commissioners discussed the pros and cons of making the investment.

Two reasons not to advertise on the billboard is the expense involved and the message that will appear on the billboard alongside the one promoting Glasgow-Barren County.

“Before I spend $6,000 I want to know what the competing space said,” said Joel Wilson, commission chair. “I’d hate to be on there with adult entertainment.”
