A dog that had bitten an elderly Barren County man does not have rabies, according to officials with the Barren River District Health Department.
Dennis Spear, an environmentalist with the district health department, reported that the dog was determined not to have rabies and was released from a 10-day quarantine.
The quarantine began on Oct. 22 after Malcom Smith, 80, was bitten on the back of the leg by his neighbor’s Australian Shepherd mix dog.
The Barren County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the dog bite and Deputy Mike Houchens filed a report on the incident. Houchens spoke to the dog’s owner, Marcus Valdez, who said the dog had never bitten anymore in the past. Houchens also questioned Valdez about the dog’s vaccinations and learned that Valdez normally vaccinates the dog himself.
Spear placed the dog under a 10-day quarantine after learning the dog’s rabies shots were not up to date.
