Coach, team support player after wreck

GLASGOW — “Basketball is a non-related issue,” Glasgow High School boy’s basketball coach John Tinsley said, “We are very, very fortunate that Tyree [Mansfield] is OK and that he will be able to recover over a time period.”

Mansfield, a freshman basketball player at GHS, was injured in a single-vehicle wreck on Sorenson Avenue on Dec. 1, according to Tinsley.

Mansfield was the passenger in the car, according to GHS senior basketball player Conner Glass.

According to the collision report, an unnamed juvenile driver told police he tried to get back on the roadway after overcorrecting the vehicle he was operating, but he hit the side of the road, causing the 2002 Nissan Altima to flip and roll over.

The report said the vehicle damage was “very severe.”

Mansfield spent an unknown amount of time in a local hospital.

“He had like seven spots fractured in his back,” Glass said. “He’s pretty blessed to come through this situation the way he is. You can just tell God was with him through it all.”

Milas Norris, another GHS senior basketball player, said he is pretty sure Mansfield won’t be playing for the rest of the year.

“[Mansfield] has like a back brace around him,” Norris said. “I’m glad he’s all right for the most part and I just hope he gets better.”

Tinsley said the team prayed for his recovery.

“He is hurt pretty bad. We just want him to be fine,” Tinsley said. “With kids and teenagers in cars, you gotta really be careful with what is going on. We just want to send the message, no matter what, wear that seat belt.”

Tyree is a “real good guy,” Glass said.

“He always works hard in practice, which is when most of when I hang out with him,” Glass said. “I [gave] him a few rides home every now and then. Definitely fun to be around.”

Norris shared similar sentiments about Mansfield.

“I just know he’s always smiling,” Norris said. “I like him. I haven’t talked to him a lot before this year because we’ve been in different [schools] or whatever. But then once he got on the basketball team, I started talking to him more, I know he likes playing basketball ...”

Glass said Mansfield told him the support he received made him feel much better.

“I talked to him today too just from Facebook messaging and he was telling me he was just real glad to be back with his family and friends, people who care about him,” Glass said. “He said he was surprised to see how many people actually care about him.”

Norris said he also kept in contact with Mansfield after the wreck.

“I talked to him last night a little bit,” Norris said. “He’s going to come to the games to watch. He said he’s gonna still come out and watch. I was texting him. I’ve [seen] some pictures on Instagram and what not. He seems like he’s doing fine.”

Glass and Norris said they hope Mansfield comes back to play basketball next season.

“[Norris and I] won’t be on the team, but we’ll come back and watch him,” Glass said. “I would like to see him back out here.”
