Mio promotes news editor to editor

Glasgow Daily Times

James Brown has been named editor of the Glasgow Daily Times, according to Publisher Pete Mio.

“James is an extremely gifted individual who is a team builder and very capable in meeting the Daily Times’ future goals to maintain and build an even stronger newspaper covering the region,” Daily Times Publisher Pete Mio said. “He enjoys the daily challenges involved in running and leading a newsroom covering a dynamic market such as Glasgow and the surrounding counties.

“James knows the business and the community — he’s the right person for this job.”

Brown has 10 years in the newspaper business as a sports editor and news editor.

He majored in English at the University of Southern Mississippi, with a minor in history. His ambition was to be a poet, but it didn’t pay, so he fell into the newspaper business, he said.

“I was given my opportunity by Sid Salter, then owner of the Scott County Times in Forest, Miss., to cover high school football games,” Brown said. “A few weeks later, John Keith, owner of The Carthaginian in Carthage, Miss., was looking for a sports editor and Salter recommended me.

“I’ve been in the business since September of 1997 and have loved every minute of it,” he added.

Brown came to the Daily Times in May, 2003, as the sports editor, recruited by then editor Layne Bruce.

“Layne allowed me to come here and expand my knowledge of newspapers. I learned much of what I know about the business from he and Waid Prather, the editor in Carthage,” Brown said. “They were both very influential in my approach to the job, as were former Daily Times Editor Joel Wilson and News Editor Connie Pickett.

“I don’t expect myself to ever match what those latter two have each meant to this paper over the years, but I certainly believe the future is bright for the Daily Times. We have a great staff in the newsroom and throughout the building. I count them all as friends.”

Brown and his wife, Alison, have two children, Ashlyn, 11, and Auggie, 9.

The Daily Times also recently added Barrett Wright as a part time sports writer and Will Spillman as a part time photographer.
