Published November 20, 2008 08:06 am - The Plaza Theatre will present “An Evening of Bluegrass III” on Saturday. Bluegrass returns to Plaza Several area bands will be highlights By GINA KINSLOW Glasgow Daily Times GLASGOW — The Plaza Theatre will present “An Evening of Bluegrass III” on Saturday.
The concert gets under way at 6 p.m. and will feature bluegrass tunes by Southern Express, The No Bottom Boys, JawBone, Slow Gold and Arthur Hatfield and Buck Creek. Southern Express, which is a band composed of members hailing from both Kentucky and Tennessee, is reuniting just for this concert. “The plaza is a great place to play. First of all, it’s a super building,” said Gary Pennington, who plays banjo and sings tenor for the group. “The times we’ve played over there, the atmosphere has been great. We just love playing over there.” Also reuniting specifically for the concert are The No Bottom Boys, which is composed of a circuit court judge, a car salesman, a small town businessman and a banker. “We are looking forward to it,” said Barren Circuit Court Judge Phil Patton. “We haven’t performed in more than a year. We are practicing our ‘old songs.’” The concert is a fundraiser for the theater. “All proceeds go to our fundraising effort to restore the rigging system in the theater that was not part of the original renovation,” said Steve Jones, theater director. “This is the third time in four years we have presented this bluegrass concert and it has been very successful with (more than) 500 tickets sold.” Money from the first two bluegrass concerts helped with the general operating expenses of the theater. “This time the money is being specifically earmarked for a renovation project — the renovation of the stage rigging system,” Jones said. Tickets are $10 each, with $1 transaction fee per order. Tickets can be purchased at the theater’s box office, online at www.plaza.org, or over the phone at (270) 361-2101.
