Backdoor Primitives on Front Street in Glasgow can take a shopper back in time.
The store offers items that look like they were made a century ago like old toys, picture frames, Christmas ornaments and salt boxes.
“I order most of it from a company and the previous owner makes a lot of it as well and I buy from her,” said owner Monica Riddle. “Some of the candles she makes by hand. We have some really neat stuff that she’s brought in the last few days.”
Riddle said for people who don’t know what primitives are, “It’s kind of old-timey stuff. Things like salt boxes that people would have used in the past, toys children would have played with. I think it’s really neat stuff.”
Riddle, who bought the store four weeks ago from its previous owner, said that she enjoys the furniture and candles the most.
“The candles make it smell good in here and we don’t even have any burning,” she said. “There’s just a lot of them and they all smell good.”
The store, according to Riddle, was a little bare compared to a few weeks ago.
“We had our Christmas open house last week and it went well,” she said. “It was 20 percent off of everything in the store. I don’t think we’ll have another sale until after the first of the year, but items are still reasonably priced.”
Riddle said that Backdoor Primitives offers something for everyone.
“I think we have something that even somebody who doesn’t really know about these will like,” she said. “Even if you don’t like this type of stuff, everybody loves candles.”
