An early morning fire caused heavy damage to a Cave City hotel.
Police officers with the Cave City Police Department received a call around 2 a.m. that flames were seen coming from the roof of the Comfort Inn at 801 Mammoth Cave St.
The policemen went inside the hotel and notified the clerk that the building was on fire. They then obtained the master key to the rooms and began evacuating the hotel, said Mike Gibbons with the Cave City Police Department.
Firefighters with the Cave City Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene minutes later.
“The call came in somewhere about a quarter after 2,” said Deputy Chief Kevin Jandt with the fire department.
Firefighters with the Park City Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to assist Cave City firefighters, and Jandt said when he arrived on the scene he requested additional assistance from Horse Cave and Hiseville volunteer fire departments, as well as the Glasgow Fire Department.
The building sustained a substantial amount of damage, Jandt said.
“The whole roof of the building is pretty much gone,” he said.
The cause of the fire was not known at press time.
“It’s still being investigated,” he said.
At press time the state fire marshal and detectives with Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agency were on the scene.
“We’re trying to do some investigative work and we’re taking pictures to try and figure out where the general fire was,” he said.
