GLASGOW

MEETING: Barren County Board of Education

DATE: Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009

ACTIONS: The board approved the following: two change orders at North Jackson Elementary (NJE) to install speed bumps on the main entrance for $2,950 and make a price adjustment to the electrical contract for (-$15,504); project closeout forms (BG-4s) for NJE; Kentucky Education Technology System (KETS) offer of assistance; declaration of surplus property for sale; minutes of the Oct. 15 meeting; payment of bills, salaries and accounts; monthly financial reports; out-of-state/overnight student travel; 2009-10 Site-Based Decision-Making Council (SBDM) budgets; personnel requests; and the McKinney-Vento Instruction Assistant job descriptions.

REPORTS: Jim Ivy with RBS Designs and Daryl Wheeler with Venture Contracting gave a construction report on NJE saying the project is essentially complete. Director of Instruction/Technology Benny Lile reported on KETS assistance in the amount of $60,000 and successful eighth-grade EXPLORE test results. Principal Scott Harper gave a progress report on Austin Tracy Elementary (AT). Director of Pupil Personnel Bo Matthews reported on McKinney-Vento funding for two aide positions and student attendance, which rebounded to 94 percent on Thursday. Director of Pupil Transportation Bud Tarry reported 15 bus cameras have been received and will be installed shortly. Director of Facilities Steve Russell reported an old stove as surplus property, the completion of the basketball and play areas at AT and purchase of an eight-passenger van. Director of Finance John Stith gave the monthly financial report for October. The district received approximately $1 million in State Fiscal Stabilization Funds (SFSF) and more than $10,000 has been raised for United Way through the Barren County Education Foundation.

RECOGNITIONS: Samantha Smith, Barren County High School, Classified Employee of the Month; Katrinka Wagoner, BCHS, Certified Employee of the Month; Hayley Worman, BCHS, Student of the Month; and Jacqui Radus, Barren County little league program, Outstanding Achievement Award.

CLOSED SESSION: Board members went into closed session to discuss future acquisition or sale of property, but took no action after coming out of executive session.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The Barren County Alumni Hall of Honor will be Saturday, Nov. 21. A dinner at 6 p.m. at Trojan Academy will be $20 per person. The program will follow at 7 p.m. in the Barren County High School Auditorium.
