City worker in serious condition

A Glasgow sanitation worker is in serious condition at the University of Louisville Hospital after he was run over by a city garbage truck on Monday. Around 10 a.m. the truck was sitting in the parking lot of Traveler’s Food Plaza, 601 North Race St., while David Coomer, 41, of Glasgow, was standing beside the truck talking with a couple people, according to a Glasgow Police Department report.

The driver, Roel Pena, 34, of Glasgow, stated to police that he was going to pull the truck onto West Cherry Street, and as he began to move he struck Coomer. It is unknown if Coomer was stepping towards the truck at the time the collision occurred.

The collision pinned Coomer under the right rear tire and axle of the truck, then Pena backed the truck off of Coomer, according to the report.

Barren-Metcalfe EMS transported Coomer to T.J. Samson Community Hospital, from where he was transported by helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment. He sustained injuries to both legs and to the right side of his body, in addition to possible internal injuries, according to Jack Chadwell, Glasgow public works superintendent.

As of Tuesday morning, Coomer is listed in serious condition in the surgical intensive care unit at the University of Louisville.

Chadwell said some fellow co-workers of Coomer’s are travelling to Louisville on Tuesday to visit him in the hospital, and the thoughts of the department are with Coomer during his recovery.

“It’s still too early to speculate on what occurred and we are still evaluating the situation. I hope we will hear something positive from this,” he said.

Lt. Col. Kent Keen, Glasgow Police Department spokesman, said that an investigation is under way, just as it would be for a traffic accident. He said that there appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the investigation.

“It was just one of those unfortunate accidents,” he said.
