Silent auction benefits plaza

Plaza Theatre fans have a chance to purchase memorabilia from the historic theater this month by shopping the list of silent auction items posted on the theater’s Web site.
The silent auction started Monday.
“We hope to raise at least $1,000 from the auction,” said Steve Jones, theater director.
The silent auction is part of an ongoing fundraiser to purchase a new rigging system and renovate the theater’s marquee. In August, the theater celebrated its 75th anniversary with a gala and a benefit concert by The Kentucky HeadHunters.
“All told, we have raised about $18,000 toward the new rigging system,” Jones said. “We need about $100,000.”
The silent auction will remain open until 7 p.m. on Nov. 20, the night of the Doug Berky Comedy Show.
Items to be auctioned range from a refurbished theater seat created by the theater seating manufacturer as an option for replacing the original Plaza seating during the 2005 renovation to the theater’s original marquee letters.
“The larger green (marquee letters) are $50 each and the smaller red ones are $25 each,” Jones said. “We have sold several of those so far. Quantities and condition of each letter are limited. The letters make unique and historic Christmas gifts, that is why several purchasers have said they were buying them.”
Among the items to be auctioned is a framed petit-point tapestry of a Gothic scene. The work measures approximately 35 inches wide by 42 inches tall.
The tapestry was donated by Dr. Bharat Mody, a Glasgow surgeon.
Mody discovered the tapestry in an antique shop while traveling Europe.
“From time to time I just hang around in antique shops,” he said, which is where he discovered the tapestry, which was framed in Scotland. “I don’t know who made it or what the significance is of it. I thought somebody around here might be interested in it since we are a sister of the city of Glasgow, Scotland.”
He chose to donate the work to the theater for the auction because he wanted to help.
“As I’ve said, any local charity, I’m always willing to help them out in whatever way I can, because that makes a bigger difference for our community,” Mody said.
Also posted on the theater’s Web site are items autographed by entertainers who have performed at the Plaza. These items will be auctioned separately on eBay.
