IN MINUTES: Barren County Fiscal Court

GLASGOW

MEETING: Barren County Fiscal Court

DATE: Nov. 3, 2009

ACTION: Magistrates took the following action: approved payment of claims as submitted, adopted a resolution approving the lease for fiscal court ambulance purchase and authorized execution of various documents related to such a lease, acknowledged the receipt of Sheriff’s Official Recept for 2009 property tax bills and voted to place a referendum on the May 2010 ballot to raise property taxes by five cents per $100 assessed value to pay for the new county jail.

REPORTS: Judge-Executive Davie Greer reported that she will meet with county attorney Jeff Sharp, Kevin Myatt, planning director of the Joint City-County Planning Commission, and representatives from the Kentucky Manufactured Homes Institute to further discuss how the county can move forward with planning and zoning related to mobile and manufactured homes as soon as they can find a date that KMHI can come to Barren County from Frankfort. Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton reported that more than $19 million in property tax dues were sent out last week and his office has seen a large rush of payments in the first few days. Acting Jailer Matt Mutter said the Barren County Corrections Center currently has 135 inmates, of which 74 are state inmates. The jail conducted a routine annual test of its smoke alarms and evacuation systems on Tuesday and everything was working properly, he said.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Greer announced that there will be several Veteran’s Day ceremonies throughout the county during the upcoming week. The county government building will be closed on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11. The Freedom School will hold a flag raising and add bricks to its memorial on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., there will be a veteran’s dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the National Guard Armory at 6 p.m. and there will be a ceremony on Veteran’s Day at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center in the morning, she said. The magistrates agreed to participate in the Community Christmas Parade on Dec. 5 and will ride together in a truck provided by the road department. The magistrates will work in shifts as Salvation Army bell ringers in front of K-Mart on Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The County Christmas Luncheon will be on Dec. 14 at 11:30 a.m. at the Barren River State Park. The dedication of North Jackson Elementary School will be on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Local resident Ernie Wagoner said there is a new veterans organization in Barren County called Freedom Warriors.
