Mount Tabor plans 210th anniversary celebration By AMBER DILLEY Glasgow Daily Times GLASGOW — Mount Tabor Baptist Church, one of the oldest active churches in Barren County, is celebrating its 210th anniversary Sunday.
The church, on Dripping Springs Road, opened in 1798 with seven members, preacher Alexander Davidson and clerk John Murphy. Thanks to the 1799 Great Revival in Kentucky, the church added 60 members. It had 91 members by 1800. Brother Chris Francis, the interim pastor at the church, said he got involved with the church because he knew the former pastor, Brother Gene Geralds, now retired. “It’s a really good church with really good people,” Francis said. “It’s pretty exciting to be a part of a church with such a long and good history. It’s been around quite a long time and it’s still rolling.” The first structure was a log meeting house with galleries, on a bluff overlooking Beaver Creek, near what is now the Glasgow Municipal Airport. Before the structure was built, the church met in various member’s homes. During its history, at least two church buildings burned. In 1890, the church was rebuilt on the present site and in 1969, it was remodeled and has been recently redecorated. At present, the church has about 200 members. The church’s fourth preacher was Jacob Locke. He served more than 40 years and baptized about 700 people. Mount Tabor’s daughter churches include Bethel Baptist Church, Dover Baptist Church, New Hope Baptist Church, Salem Baptist Church and Glasgow Baptist Church.
