Scholarship will help single moms with cost of education Created to honor memory of sister’s willingness to give By CASSANDRA GROCE Glasgow Daily Times GLASGOW — A new scholarship will be available to single mothers attending the Glasgow Western Kentucky University campus during the summer.
Harold Spear created The Linda Spear Goad scholarship in honor of his sister’s willingness to help others achieve a better quality of life. Many single mothers striving to improve their lives have already attained a degree from WKU while facing the daily challenges of parenting. “My biggest challenge was living on my own and child care,” said Crystal Nuckols, a full time academic advisor for the Glasgow campus who received a degree in Sociology while being a single mom. “It’s really hard when you are single, trying to go to school, work and make everything meet while trying to be a parent.” The mother earned her degree in four and a half years because she also took two classes each summer semester in order to keep pace with traditional full-time students. When Nuckols attended school there was no summer financial aid available and she needed a student loan in addition to grant and scholarship money to finish her education. These financial sacrifices did not deter her from her goal however. “It’s important to have an education because you can show your kids that they can do it too,” Nuckols said. “You can give them a better life than what they would have had.” Women like Nuckols are who Linda’s friends and family hope to help with this $1,000 summer scholarship. Linda’s strong ties to education, being a former teacher and program coordinator for the Barren County Literacy Council, are partly why Spear feels helping single mothers would be something Linda would do. “I know a lot of single mothers work these minimum wage jobs,” explained Spear. “Like they are waitresses and only make $2.11 an hour plus tips, and they realize they need a better education in order to improve their quality of life.” Single mothers must take a minimum of 3 credit hours in the summer and take classes at the Glasgow WKU campus to be eligible. “This will be particularly beneficial to these single mothers who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their children and doing it single-handedly,” explained Dr. Juanita Bayless, Associates Dean at Glasgow WKU, DELO Campus Director. To make a contribution in support of this scholarship, make a tax-deductible check (include Federal Tax Exempt 20-5289316) payable to Linda’s Scholarship and mail it to P.O. Box 2174, Glasgow, Ky., 42141.
