— Mammoth Cave National Park will sponsor a genealogy seminar and cemetery workshop Friday and Saturday.
The genealogy seminar is Friday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Lions Club in Park City, behind Bell’s Tavern Historical Park.
J. Mark Lowe will present two programs: Finding Civilian Conservation Corps Records and Five Ways to Jump-Start your Kentucky Research.
The cemetery workshop will be at the Bell’s Tavern Pavilion in Park City on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. The field portion of the workshop will be in the Hayden and Zion Church cemeteries.
Kathy Proffitt, with the National Park Service, said cemetery conservation has become more popular as cemeteries get older.
“We have had some church congregations that had approached the park about trimming up the cemetery because they can get quite overgrown in some areas,” Proffitt said. “We thought this might be a good opportunity to go to some of these and look at some of the problem areas in detail.”
University of Louisville archaeologist Phil DiBlasi and cultural resource specialist Jay Hemberger will share cemetery lore and teach techniques to preserve old cemeteries.
Participants should wear long pants, sturdy boots and insect repellent because the cemeteries are overgrown.
Both programs are free and open to the public.C
