Missing person case turns out to be murder

An investigation that police initially thought was a missing person’s case has turned out to be a homicide with connections in Monroe County.

George R. Brown, 67, of Trafalgar, Ind., was reported missing on June 24. He was last seen June 15 by his son, James, at his home.

James Brown said his father was with Charles David Doss, an employee of George Brown. According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, Brown told his son he was taking Doss to Indianapolis, then he was going to Lake Cumberland and would return June 22.

After Brown was reported missing, detectives with the sheriff’s department learned there had been no activity on Brown’s banking accounts. Detectives learned that the last phone call made on Brown’s cell phone was on June 15 at 4:45 p.m. The call was between Brown and his other son, Matt, who lives in Linton, Ind.

Detectives learned from Kentucky State Police that no one at or around Lake Cumberland had seen Brown or a truck that matched the description of the one he was driving.

On Aug. 11, officers with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department found Brown’s 2003 white Ford F-350 pickup about nine miles east of Tompkinsville off Ky. 100.

The truck was taken to a police crime lab in Indianapolis, where a preliminary check revealed traces of human blood on the outside of the driver’s door and several places inside the bed of the truck. Since Doss was the last known person to be with Brown, detectives spoke with him a few times.

Doss confessed that he was involved with Brown’s death.

“Mr. Doss admits to shooting George in the back of the head on George’s property,” said Chief Deputy Doug Cox with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.

The men had a disagreement, Cox said, but added he could not disclose what the argument was about.

Doss told police he placed Browns’ body beneath a tarp and then placed tires on top of the tarp in order to hide the body, the Kentucky State Police said. Doss also told police where they would likely find Brown’s body.

Police recovered a body likely to be Brown on Brown’s property in Indiana on Sept. 25. Police are waiting for DNA results to determine if the body is Brown.

Doss had moved to Wisconsin from Indiana after meeting a woman via the Internet, Cox said. He was arrested and charged with murder on Sept. 26 and has since waived extradition back to Indiana.

The weapon used in the murder was a .380 automatic firearm, which has since been recovered.

Doss initially gave the firearm to his half brother, who then gave it to someone else.
