The Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce and the Metcalfe County Fiscal Court are promising family fun for all ages as they co-sponsor the 28th Annual Pumpkin Festival this Saturday on the Edmonton Courthouse Lawn and surrounding areas. Events begin at 8 a.m. with a 5K run and walk starting at the Bowling Park Community Center and continue well into the afternoon with a monster dance contest and karaoke. Among the activities at the festival are pumpkin carving and biggest pumpkin contests, a kids parade, outhouse dash, gospel music concert and a tractor show. Also, several food and arts and crafts vendors will be on hand. Metcalfe County Judge-Executive Greg Wilson said the Pumpkin Festival is always a fun day and he is looking forward to visiting with the attendees. “The crowds get bigger every year and we’re looking forward to a beautiful day,” he said. Gaye Shaw, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, says that booth space around the Edmonton square is first-come, first-served and the chamber will collect booth fees during the festival. Vendors are allowed to begin setting up Thursday evening through Saturday morning and there has always been enough space for anyone wanting to have a booth, she said. Downtown Edmonton businesses are encouraged to decorate store fronts and windows with seasonal colors, and students in the Metcalfe County High School art department have painted windows around the square in preparation, according to the Chamber. Edmonton City Councilman Jack Vrocher said the festival is a “tremendous one day effort” that supports the entire community. “It means a lot,” he said. “We’ll have a lot of traffic, a lot of people. It’s the one day of the year that really brings people into the city and the county to spend money. And it’s spreading out which brings even more people in.” Festival goers will notice many traditional events at this years’ autumn celebration, but there will be some noticeable and messy new attractions as well. The first annual pumpkin chuckin’ contest will commence at 10 a.m. at the Metcalfe County Fairgrounds. Entrants build machines and contraptions that hurl pumpkins 50 yards through the air and smash into targets to earn cash and prizes, as well as the distinction of being named King or Queen of the Chuckers. Shaw said that she had not heard of pumpkin chuckin’ competitions until she searched around on the Internet. “It turns out there are thousands of these all over the place,” she said. “The guys who started this contest run our Blueberry Festival. You can’t really chuck a blueberry.” Parking will be available at the Edmonton State Bank and Metcalfe County Middle School with a shuttle bus provided by the Metcalfe County School System.
