Help heads to the south By AMBER DILLEY Glasgow Daily Times GLASGOW — Several people from the area have headed south to assist with relief efforts following Hurricane Gustav.
The 623rd of the Kentucky National Guard shipped out to Louisiana on Monday to help with emergency evacuations and supply transport. Sgt. Bobby Bowles, with the National Guard, said the group is headed to Alexandria and from there, will go wherever they are needed. “We don’t know where just yet. It’ll be based on what the governor of Louisiana needs,” Bowles said. “Louisiana’s still assessing the damage. They don’t know where they’re going to need us.” Arnold Haynes and Rondal Buford deployed from Glasgow on Sunday with the Glasgow-Barren County Salvation Army canteen. Sue Haynes, executive director of the Community Relief Fund, said the men may be deployed for 14 days. She said evacuees from states affected by Gustav have already come to the agency seeking assistance. “We have had several families in ... needing assistance with gas and food.” she said. “We are verifying residency on each family. They came to Glasgow to be with family and friends during the evacuation.” Contributions may be sent to The Community Relief Fund or The Salvation Army, 123 E. Washington St., Glasgow, KY 42141. Designate “disaster re-lief” on contributions.
