Sheriff able to talk man into ending standoff

A standoff between deputies of the Barren County Sheriff’s Office and a Glasgow man ended peacefully Thursday with the man in custody after about an hour of negotiations.

Nicholas R. Sedam, 31, of Glasgow was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal mischief.

Deputies responded to a domestic complaint call around 9 a.m. at 216 Old Scottsville Road Loop 1. When they attempted to make contact with Sedam in the residence, he initially refused to come out or answer any phone calls made to the home, according to a BCSO report.

At one point, Sedam started a vehicle inside the garage and rammed it into the garage door while deputies attempted to negotiate with him.

Sheriff Chris Eaton was eventually able to convince Sedam to talk to him. He made contact by approaching the residence and passing a card through a crack in the window that instructed the suspect to call the sheriff’s cellular phone number. Eaton was able to talk to Sedam on the phone and persuade him to come outside the home without further incident.

“It was just kind of one of those things,” Eaton said. “I was able to build a rapport and get it over quickly.”

Eaton said the residence was in a populated area and a crowd was being drawn to the scene, so he wanted to resolve the standoff as quickly as possible to prevent it from escalating and increasing the chances of someone being injured.

“I told him we weren’t there to hurt him. We just wanted to talk to him,” Eaton said.

Luckily, Sedam surrendered without an altercation.

“You never know what’s going on inside,” Eaton said. “Things can go very badly sometimes. Yesterday was one of those successes.”

Sedam was lodged in the Barren County Correctional Center on a $1,500 cash bond.

Sheriff Eaton along with deputies Steve Runyon, Mike Wood, Wayne Branham, Detective Rusty Anderson and Constable Buddy Houchens assisted with the incident at the scene.
