Tip leads to discovery of 40 pot plants By BURTON SPEAKMAN Glasgow Daily Times AUSTIN — Forty marijuana plants were discovered Thursday near the Austin community after a tip was received by the Barren County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office along with detectives from the Barren/Edmonson Drug Task Force responded to the tip about marijuana plants being found near a creek side near Allens Crossover, according to a sheriff’s office report. This case appears to be an example of someone planting marijuana on someone else’s property without the knowledge of the owner, said Sheriff Chris Eaton. “The plants were in a pretty isolated area. They were hard to find,” he said. “You could drive back part of the way and then you had to walk.” The marijuana was found by people who had gone to the area to fish, Eaton said. Marijuana had been planted in small groups near the creek bed. Some of it could be easily identified once out by the creek, but it was a pretty overgrown area, he said. The total estimated value was $80,000, according to the report. No arrests were made Thursday. The case is still under investigation and arrests are pending, Eaton said. This type of incident shows why people need to occasionally go out to isolated sections of their property, he said. Although if marijuana is found, a property owner should contact law enforcement and not get near the plants. This is first marijuana grow located in Barren County this year, Eaton said. Less than a month ago, Kentucky State Police located more than 200 marijuana plants in Hart County.
