Austin Tracy firefighter Lloyd Mabry was laid to rest Saturday, almost two weeks after being critically injured in a hit-and-run accident.
Mabry, 31, a 13-year-veteran of the fire department, died from those injuries on June 30 at Vanderbilt Hospital.
At his funeral, family and friends remembered a man who was described as caring more for others than himself.
“Lloyd would want us to remember the good times and to laugh and smile at the joy he brought us because that’s how Lloyd was,” said Brother Frank Wright, who officiated at the service. “He will forever be missed and his love and courage will live forever in our hearts.”
After the services, Mabry was taken to his final resting place at Caney Fork Cemetery, where more than 100 local firefighters were present to give him full fireman’s honors.
The companies included Austin Tracy, Fountain Run, Hiseville, North Metcalfe, Temple Hill, Bowling Green and Glasgow, as well as the Barren County Sheriff’s Department.
Jason Blakley, assistant chief with Hiseville, described Mabry as a firefighter who was “always really good to help,” Blakley said. “His heart was in the right place.”
Larry Shaw, a member of the Fountain Run VFD, reiterated the words spoken at the funeral, saying Mabry was always smiling and talking.
“If you didn’t know him, you knew him before you left,” Shaw said.
As Mabry was laid to rest, authorities continue to search for persons of interest in the accident.
Mabry was operating a Yamaha motorcycle when he was struck by a motor vehicle on Peters Creek Road on June 22. The car fled the scene.
Modesto, Norboerto and Maria Figueroa, two Hispanic males and a Hispanic female who were working as tenant farmers for a family in Monroe County, are being sought.
Their last known place of residence was off the Jeff Hicks Road in the Austin community.
A $3,500 reward is being offered in the case.
