Red Cross Elementary School staff and faculty came together Monday afternoon after learning the school’s principal had died over the weekend.
Barry David Britt, 46, of Glasgow, died Saturday at his home. He had served as principal of Red Cross for three years.
“We just had a staff meeting and everybody showed up,” said Jeff Moore, the school’s assistant principal. “He is going to be very, very missed. He is going to be impossible to replace because he meant so much to the parents, staff and the students.”
Moore had worked with Britt as assistant principal for one year, filling a vacancy left by Anthony Frazier, who took the principal’s job at Park City Elementary after working as the assistant principal at Red Cross for two years.
Frazier described Britt as being a “wonderful person.”
“Above all, he did what was best for kids,” Frazier said. “The whole time I worked for him, he did what was best for kids.”
Dr. Jerry Ralston, superintendent of the Barren County School System, said Britt’s passing “came as a shock to all of us.”
“It’s difficult to understand or even comprehend at this time,” he said. “I don’t believe there was anyone more dedicated to his work or to his district. He will be greatly missed by everyone.”
Prior to serving as principal of Red Cross, Britt was director of the Barren County Day Treatment Center and had served as assistant principal at Barren County Middle School and an itinerant elementary counselor at Austin Tracy Elementary. He began his career in education as a primary teacher at Austin Tracy, where he taught for seven years.
The Barry Britt Scholarship Fund has been established in memory of Britt. It will be awarded to those who have been students at Red Cross Elementary.
According to Marla Stewart, guidance counselor at Red Cross, the faculty and staff will be making contributions to the fund.
Anyone who would like to make a contribution may do so by sending money to the school in care of the Barry Britt Scholarship Fund, c/o Red Cross Elementary, 215 Parkview Drive, Glasgow, KY 42141.
