Blueberry festival draws crowds

— The heat couldn’t keep the vendors and customers away from the 8th annual Blueberry Festival Friday and Saturday on the Edmonton Town Square.
The fruity festival drew a lot of people, vendors and customers alike, locally and from Tennessee.
Priscilla McElroy and her husband came from Tennessee on an RV trip and ended up in Edmonton on a whim.
“We were over at Diamond Caverns and I saw a brochure about the festival,” she said. “We decided we’d come down and see what the little town had to offer. We like it, it’s a nice little town.”
The McElroys were selling homemake purses and little sock creatures.
Lynnie Marshall, who was selling candles and accessories, was also in Edmonton for the first time, and also spontaneously.
“We heard about it from a friend last Friday and decided we’d do it,” Marshall said. “We’ve never been here before and we like it so far.”
For Carole Stacey, another from Tennessee, it was not her first time in Edmonton, and would certainly not be her last.
“We’ve been up here for this for the past four years,” she said. “We grow blueberries where we live and we like to hobnob with other people who enjoy blueberries as much as we do.”
Stacey said the area itself was also a draw, but mostly the blueberries.
“The people are good, the blueberries are good and the town is good,” she said. “If they did this every weekend, I’d have to move here.”
Alas, the event is yearly, and this year, added the 5K blueberry fun run/walk on Saturday, hosted by Get Fit for Ladies and the Kentucky Blueberry Growers Association.
Some old favorites were back, including the free blueberry milkshakes and pie eating contest, both hosted by CeeBee Foods of Edmonton.
The event was hosted by the Kentucky Blueberry Growers Association, and over the weekend featured pancake breakfasts, live entertainment, the fun run, a diaper derby, the Blueberry Cookoff and several games.
