Emergency Medical Services Week culminated Friday morning with the annual appreciation breakfast for area emergency workers.

The event, organized by T.J. Samson Community Hospital employees, brought together Glasgow and Barren County firefighters, police officers, sheriff’s department employees, ambulance officials and STATCARE flight crews.

Bonnie Bennett, a registered nurse at T.J. Samson and organizer of the breakfast, said invitations were also extended to other county EMS officials that have offered assistance to the local region. They included Cumberland, Clinton, Monroe and Allen counties.

Bennett viewed the 10-year-old event as a great opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of the area’s EMS crews.

“We in the county forget what wonderful services we have,” she said. “It’s an honor for us to do this.”

Each of the tables were filled with decorations provided by T.J. Samson’s emergency room nurses. As a special gift, EMS flashlights were given to all attendees. In addition, door prizes were awarded throughout the morning.

Terry Powers, T.J. Samson’s director of emergency services, also offered his thanks for the hard work emergency workers do in the community.

“They’re really an exceptional group of people who do a tremendous job for Barren County and Glasgow,” he said.

Barren-Metcalfe County Ambulance Service employee Steve Jolly appreciated the breakfast and the thanks offered to him and other EMS personnel. For Jolly, the greatest satisfaction he gets from his job is being able to assist others.

“It’s about saving lives and being there to help,” he said. “We go where people fear going.”

Officer Roy Howard with the Glasgow Police Department said his job stays interesting because it changes from day to day.

Like Jolly, Howard also took pride in having the opportunity to help fellow members of the community.

“The most satisfaction comes from making a difference in someone’s life who may be in a bad situation,” he said.
