Program earns certification By GINA KINSLOW Glasgow Daily Times GLASGOW — Glasgow High School is one of three state high schools to have a nationally certified Project Lead the Way Program.
By becoming certified, students who take classes through the program can apply for college credit for the classes they take while in high school. “We are very proud to say that we are one of three schools in Kentucky who have been nationally certified with PLTW — our engineering program and our biotech program,” said Kelly Bell, GHS principal. “Once again we are trying to get those kids to excel to higher levels.” To become nationally certified, GHS must offer four PLTW classes and prove it has state-of-the-art software and equipment. It must also prove that it has a partnership team in place and that school counselors and teachers have been trained. Larry Glass Jr., a local contractor, is a member of the school’s PLTW partnership team. “This is a great thing for Glasgow Independent School System, because there is a shortage of engineers all across the country. So anything that generates interest in engineering is a very positive thing and gives kids what they normally would not get,” he said. After a school has offered PLTW for two years and meets all the criteria, the school can be nationally certified, said J.R. Dakin, PLTW instructor. GHS was visited recently by personnel with the Kentucky Department of Education, Project Lead the Way and the University of Kentucky, which is the high school’s state-affiliated university. “They interviewed students. They looked at students’ work. They looked at student portfolios. They interviewed teachers. They interviewed board members. They interviewed the partnership team. It was a full-day process and at the end of it we proved we had met all the criteria,” Dakin said. At the end of each PLTW class, students take an end-of-the-year exam. “Project Lead the Way tracks the progress of their students to see how well they are doing, to see how well the school is doing,” Dakin said. “If the student wants college credit, he takes a separate exam, which is a little tougher. If they pass that exam with a 70 percent and have an 85 or better in the class, they can then apply for college credit.” Two of Dakin’s students who are planning to apply for college credit are sophomores Eric Morosa and Cody Richardson. Both students are contemplating engineering careers. “I thought this class would be a good opportunity for myself to apply for my future career,” Morosa said. He is considering a career as either a mechanical or an electrical engineer.
