Budget gets 1st approval

GLASGOW —
Barren County magistrates unanimously approved on first reading Tuesday an ordinance adopting the county’s 2008-09 budget.
The budget totals $12,121,982.41, which is $856,368.99 more than the county’s 2007-08 budget.
Fourth District Magistrate Tommy Matthews called the 2008-09 proposed budget a solid one.
“We can pay for current revenues and that’s what we intend to do. Keep providing services and not raise taxes,” he said.
Sixth District Magistrate Charles Allen added, “There are a few things I would like to see cut and a few areas I’d like to see increased. Without being specific at this time, we all agreed to accept the budget as it is.”
The budget does not include any tax increase and still allows the county to continue providing the same services, which is something Allen thinks is important.
“Everything is going to be covered,” he said.
Fifth District Magistrate Howard Bowman Jr. pointed out there are always projects that he and other magistrates wish they could include, but sometimes the funding just isn’t there to cover everything.
“There’s a lot of things that I’ve got a wish list for. I’d like to have more blacktop and I’d like to get some of these 12-foot roads widened. I don’t think that is in the budget this year to do very much of that,” he said.
The budget does include a small pay increase for county employees and additional funding for employee health benefits, according to Judge-Executive Davie Greer.
“This budget hopefully will get us through this next year. The budget has been raised $856,368.99 from last year, and the biggest part of it has been insurance and fuel,” she said. “We’ve given our employees a small raise and we’ve raised insurance, because insurance is going up. Everything else that was raised was fuel.”
The budget does not include any funding for the construction of a new jail.
Money for that project will have to come from the sale of construction bonds, Greer said.
