A trial date has been set for an Edmonton man charged with shooting two Metcalfe County brothers.
Danny Janes, 46, will appear before a jury on Aug. 6. He faces two counts of first-degree assault and one count of wanton endangerment.
Authorities said that, on Jan. 29, Janes shot Anthony Lawless, 12, and Austin Grimes, 13, in the head before turning the gun on himself. The boys are the sons of Darla Lawless, who was Janes’ girlfriend at the time.
Grimes was released from Lexington’s Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Center in March, his mother previously said. Lawless was continuing rehabilitation.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Karen Davis asked Judge Phil Patton on Tuesday for a speedy trial, a request first made at Janes’ arraignment.
“I know there was some question as to whether or not the commonwealth had that right,” Davis said. “In looking at the statutes, my understanding is that when the case is involving the abuse or assault of a child, the commonwealth does have that right.”
A final pretrial conference is scheduled for July 15.
