Golf tourney set to benefit Community Medical Center By MELANIE THOMAS Glasgow Daily Times Now that the Master’s is over and done with, it’s time to move on to the real golf tournament.
The Community Medical Center will be having its Fourth annual golf tournament at 8:30 a.m. at Fox Hollow Golf Club on Wednesday to raise money for the center. The center is a volunteer-based program that helps working, uninsured adults and seniors access health care, although it is not a health insurance company. It is a branch of T.J. Samson Community Hospital. “The community cares about people who are in a position where they are not able to seek medical care,” said Dr. Bharat Mody, CMC chairman. “They saw a need to help the working uninsured.” To be considered for the program, applicants must be working but not have health insurance, have a low income and be a Barren County resident between the ages of 18 to 64. The center also assists low income seniors with prescription medications and in obtaining affordable hearing aids and eyeglasses. “There were so many people that were left out without health insurance,” Mody said. “They had to go to the emergency room (which is costly) or seniors couldn’t afford all of their prescription medication.” There is a 90 percent cost share for up to $200 per month. Applications for senior citizens are reviewed every six months. Uninsured working adults can receive help finding basic health care, vision care, dental care, physiotherapy and prescription medications through the center. The center increased the amount of money offered to adults in March, raising the benefit for prescription medicines from $150 to $250 for a three-month period. The senior citizen category was also raised from $100 to $200. There is a 10 percent co-share cost for both categories. The center is entirely volunteer-based. All of the participating doctors donate their services to the center, Mody said. The center can’t assist with all medical needs though, he said. “There are limits,” Mody said. Over the last five years, the Community Medical Center has helped roughly 1,300 working adults access medical attention and prescription medicines.
