Hospital board honors Benedict

GLASGOW —
More than 40 people turned out Tuesday morning at T.J. Samson Community Hospital for a special dedication ceremony honoring the late Carroll Benedict.
Members of the former hospital board chairman’s family sat in the front row and listened as T.J. Samson CEO Bill Kindred read a resolution dedicating a boardroom to Benedict.
“He did so much for our community (and) he’s done so much for this hospital,” said Ellen Bale, vice chairman of the board and CEO of South Central Bank. “He never tired of it. He was always enthusiastic.”
Benedict died Aug. 28 following a battle with cancer. He was 67.
He joined the hospital’s board of directors in 1995 and became chairman in 2003, a position he held until his death. The resolution stated that Benedict assisted the hospital in growing into “one of the most modern and progressive medical centers in rural Kentucky.”
In her remarks, Bale referenced similarities she saw between Benedict and her own father, specifically their “entrepreneurship.”
“He reminds me of the gentleman that I knew my father to be and I can’t think of a higher honor for a person than to think that a person could be like someone else’s father,” she said.
Following the speeches and reading of the resolution, Kindred invited Benedict’s wife, Karen, up to unveil the bronze plaque posted outside the boardroom.
“This a tremendous honor and a tribute to Carroll,” Karen Benedict said through tears.
“He loved (the hospital) and everything that went on here that was an advancement,” she said. “He was just so proud and just so pleased. It meant a lot to him.
