Murray takes plea in federal case
He, Travis have been released

By BURTON SPEAKMAN
Glasgow Daily Times

A court case against two majors with the Glasgow Police Department is nearing a resolution as Maxie Murray reaches a preliminary plea agreement.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Russell issued an order Wednesday that released both Murray and Johnny Travis from detention.

The order states Murray will enter a plea in the case and because of that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Louisville has withdrawn its motion for detention for both men, according to court records.

Murray and Travis are charged with possession of hydrocodone without prescription and threatening witnesses.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office had waived its order of detention during a Tuesday hearing for Travis, because he had already agreed to plead guilty, had met with prosecutors and was cooperating with the investigation.

Russell replied that based upon the threats the two men had made he did not feel comfortable letting them out and chose at that time to keep both incarcerated. Russell had stated the threats made by both men were very serious and, in their position as police officers, they had the ability to carry out those threats.

Murray and Travis will remain on home incarceration awaiting a change of plea hearing, followed by a sentencing hearing. They will be on electronic monitoring and will not be able to leave their homes except for attorney visits and medical appointments.

The terms of release also prohibit them from possessing any firearm or dangerous device, remain drug and alcohol free, surrender their passports to probation and parole, have no contact with any of the witnesses in the case against them and have no other violations of the law.

A date for the change of plea hearing for either man has not been set. The trial was scheduled to begin on March 30.

Murray’s attorney, Steve Romines, of Louisville, and Travis’ attorney, B. Alan Simpson, of Bowling Green, were not available for comment by press time Thursday.

Murray and Travis had been in custody at the Warren County Regional Jail since their indictment and subsequent arrest on Feb. 4. They are both suspended without pay from their jobs with the Glasgow Police Department.
