Plans set for spring cleanup

It’s that time of year again.
It’s Commonwealth Clean-up Week, a time to toss out all the junk that’s been collecting around the house.
This marks the 10th year for the event, which is set for March 23-29 in Glasgow and Barren County.
Cleanup week has been taking place locally for many years, according to Mayor Darrell Pickett.
“It’s what we do for our citizens to try to help clean things up if they don’t have the opportunity to take them to the landfill,” he said.
The focus of the event is recycling, since this is the first year the county has had a recycling program, said Shannon White, Barren County’s solid waste coordinator.
“We just want to keep as much out of our landfill as possible,” he said. “It just takes up space if we throw it away, especially if it is something we can use again.”
County residents are urged to take recyclable items, as well as other trash, to area volunteer fire departments on the following days from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Monday, March 24, Hiseville Volunteer Fire Department; Tuesday, March 25, Park City and Cave City volunteer fire departments; Wednesday, March 26, Eastern Volunteer Fire Department; Thursday, March 27, Austin Tracy and Haywood Volunteer Fire departments; and Friday, March 28, Temple Hill and South Barren volunteer fire departments (South Barren’s fire station is on Steam Mill Road).
County trucks will be available to haul items from the fire stations to the regional landfill.
To avoid congestion at the landfill, all items, except appliances, must be taken to the designated drop-off points, according to the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce. There will be a charge for any item other than an appliance taken to the landfill. Refrigerators/appliances are accepted year-round at the landfill. Freon must be removed from the unit beforehand.
Old tires may be disposed of at Glasgow Tire and Auto for $1.25 per passenger car tire; $3.50 per light truck tire; $9 per medium truck tire. Call 651-7075 before bringing tires to Glasgow Tire and Auto.
Tractor tires will not be accepted, the Chamber of Commerce said.
Big O Tires will accept tires for a fee of $2.50 per passenger car or light truck tire, and Wal-Mart Automotive Center will accept tires for $1.50 per passenger or light truck tire, with a maximum of 10 tires accepted, said the Chamber of Commerce.
Used motor oil, up to five gallons, can be taken to Sherfey’s Happy Valley Shell, Highland Express Lube, Tractor Supply Company or Wal-Mart Automotive Center.
Items that can be recycled, should be presorted — paper, plastic, aluminum and steel, White said.
